Pearl House Newbury Shortlisted for Housing Design Awards 2021

Pearl House, Eden Retirement Livings first development in Newbury has been shortlisted for the Housing Design Awards 2021.

The submission for Pearl House Newbury was made by Eden Retirement Living architects ACG who designed the building creating 60 bespoke one- and two-bedroom apartments and penthouses for independent later living, along with communal facilities, concierge services, guest accommodation, retail units and car parking.

The building is unique in its design with a series of 3 and 4-storey blocks arranged in a C shape and centred around a split-level landscaped courtyard garden. Overlooking the main garden is the residents’ lounge, studio, and restaurant. On the upper courtyard level, raised planters are used to define communal garden areas and private patio spaces.

A simple material palette of red brick and bronze is enriched by a variety of textures and details including brick frames, smooth light bronze panels and recessed balconies. Inspiration has been drawn from the neighbouring 19th Century Georgian buildings and courtyard spaces to design a contemporary scheme that responds sensitively to the local area and provides an attractive backdrop for the Grade I listed St Nicholas Church.

The apartment interiors have been designed to be fully accessible for wheelchair users. Kitchen units have generous room between the units for ease of wheelchair movement and bathrooms have level access.

The Housing Design awards were launched in 1948 and are the longest running. World class judges who are experts in their field, range from planning to design and are highly respected here in the UK and overseas.

These are the only Awards promoted by all 5 major professional institutions – RICS, RIBA, RTPI, Landscape Institute and Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, meaning the awards are genuinely a cross industry partnership between various arms of government, the private sector and all key professional institutions.

Managing Partner Liam Kelly commented ‘we are thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award, as our first site for Eden, we took the design and concept very seriously and ACG have produced some fantastic designs reflecting our knowledge of the sector and taking things on a stage, we really hope people will enjoy living here and enjoying he space that we have created.’
